Proper and Legal Storage of Aerosol Cans

Aerosol Cans - Safe and Legal Storage

Storage at an Industrial Facility

Unsafe handling or careless storage of aerosol products can result in a disastrous outcome ranging from fires to explosions and ensuing injuries or worse. There are strict regulations in place from OSHA, NFPA and other organizations and it is important to make sure you are aware of any local ordinances on whether permits/licenses need to be procured. Legal ramifications could include penalties for accidental release into the environment, personal injury civil lawsuits and even criminal charges like reckless endangerment in more severe cases.

The main risks involved in aerosol can storage are flammability, adverse pressure and toxicity issues. Many contain flammable substances, are pressurized, and contents which might be hazardous. Facility housing considerations involve the can’s specific substances, the quantity being warehoused, and kind of industrial space in which they exist.

Recommendations:

  • Keep cans away from heat sources and separate from other materials that might be incompatible such as oxidizers and combustible liquids.
  • Ensure that fire extinguishers and sprinklers are present in the storage area.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation to prevent flammable vapors from building up.
  • Forklift and other machinery operators should remain clear of storeroom locations.
  • Adhere to capacity stocking limits that would be specific to propellant sprays and constraints of the holding site.
  • Develop a plan and train employees on pertinent emergency procedures for possible incidents.
  • If utilizing an industrial “vending machine” to store and dispense any aerosol product, ensure that the vending unit is rated and certified to store and handle aerosol products.
  • It’s always a good idea to seek expert advice due to potential hazards and complexity of related protocols.

Packaging of Aerosol Cans in a Box

There are huge benefits being derived from the use of aerosols in manufacturing including convenience, easy/precise application, portability and spill-proof attributes. Hermetically sealed, cylinders tend to be lightweight, compact and generally made from recyclable materials (aluminum). Aerosols are suitable for a wide range of applications from personal care to industrial usage. Let’s all make sure we adhere to a strict protocol for secure accommodations with this invaluable commodity.
